Pan European Survey: The young Europeans

Report on Attitudes to Immigrants and Refugees

in Denmark and Ireland

prepared by students at Haslev Gymnasium,

class 1a languages line.

Introduction

The report is based on 335 completed questionnaires from two Danish secondary schools, Haslev Gymnasium and Risskov Gymnasium, and from three secondary schools in Ireland, two in the Republic, Terenure College and Mount St Michael Sec. School, and one in Northern Ireland, Our Lady’s Grammar School. All the respondents  in the survey are between 15 and 20 years old, most of them between 15 and 18. Most of the respondents are students at the participants secondary schools, others come from neighbouring schools. Males and females are equal represented: 73 of the Danish students are boys, 83 girls. Of the Irish students 99 are boys, 80 girls. The schools in Denmark and in Ireland represent areas with different population density: rural areas, small towns (Haslev, Mount St Michael and Newry) and suburbs in large cities (Aarhus and Dublin).

Results and analysis

The young Danes are more aware of immigrants and refugees in their daily life. The numbers of immigrants and refugees are greater in Denmark than in Ireland.  Several young Danes are immigrants themselves or related to immigrants. More Danes are in close contact with immigrants, 59% having friends among immigrants (TABLE 1 – 3). We think that the Danes are more used to foreigners that the Irish and perhaps more able of dealing with immigrants and refugees.
